September was a busy and eventful month as we settled in to our final school year in Skerries ETNS. There was a good mixture of fun and academics and the class had no problems getting stuck in with the coursework from the start.
In English, we focused on recount writing and the texts we studied were based on non fiction stories which led to some very interesting discussions and debates in class. One such story that really captured our attention was the story of Malala Yousafzai, who we studied in detail.
In maths we focused on number activities and procedures such as subtraction and additional, working in to the millions. In the last week we have moved on to a more practical area of lines and angles and constructing angles using protractors.
In Gaeilge we are continuing to grow our vocabulary and comprehension skills as well as building on oral language and written tasks. The class seemed to enjoy our rapid fire speed interviews as Gaeilge where they took turns asking and answering questions before moving on to the next seat.
We got to use the school laptops for SESE topics and did mini projects on "benefits of EU membership for Ireland" and researching past Noble Prize winners.
In art we focused one point perspective drawing and studied how to add depth to our pictures. There was a mixture of technicality and creativity as the children created 3D art. We also worked on the fabric and fiber strand of the curriculum by working on weaving. The class worked diligently on their looms to produce a small woven woolen piece.
The highlight of the month was definitely our tour to the National Gallery of Ireland, which can be seen in a previous blog post.
Other activities included rugby, soccer and GAA coaching, assemblies and visits from some of the secondary schools to talk to the children.
