Glasnevin cemetery and Botanic Gardens

19th Nov 2025
On Thursday November 19th, 6th class went on a tour to Glasnevin Cemetery and the Botanic Gardens. We got an excellent guided tour of the cemetery and learned loads about the history of the cemetery and some of the famous people buried there.

We visited the graves of former presidents and politicians of Ireland, leaders of the the 1916 Rising and more influential people from Ireland's past and history. We learned about the life and death of Eamonn De Valera, Michael Collins, Countess Markievicz, O'Donovan Rossa and Harry Boland. The highlight was a visit to the crypt and tower of Daniel O'Connell who we have been learning about in class.

After lunch we visited the Botanic Gardens where we saw some native and exotic plants as well as the resident ducks and squirrels. We did a tour of the more tropical plants growing in the greenhouses before returning back to Skerries.
