Sinéad’s Class: Earth Day

30th Apr 2024

The theme for Earth Day 2024 is “Planet versus Plastic”. David Attenborough is very popular in our class so we didn’t need any excuse to watch some of his documentaries.

While we are so lucky to live by the sea, we have noticed that litter is becoming a growing problem in Skerries. We made tourist brochures with a twist to encourage people to pick up their litter. Our brochures warn people about what will happen to the Skerries hotspots if people continue to litter. We even added our lunch litter to the display to make our point!

We also used this as our inspiration for the Bord na Móna upcycling competition. We gathered a fine collection of plastic bottle caps and turned them into a lovely game for the children in Seolta. The children put their thinking caps on and selected The Hungry Caterpillar as a story that they remembered enjoying when they were in Pre-School. They drew various types of food for the children to choose to feed the caterpillar. We were in agreement that the element of choice makes things so much more fun!
