Eleanor's 3rd Class

29th Sep 2025

It’s been a busy but exciting few weeks as we’ve settled back into school routines and explored lots of new learning.

We’ve also been very fortunate to have a student teacher, Aoife, with us, who has shared plenty of creative ideas and engaging lessons with us.

Over the past month, one of our main focuses has been the History strand of Myths & Legends. In particular, we studied the tale of the Brown Bull of Cooley. We read and discussed the story, took part in group drama activities, and even designed our own newspaper front pages. To round off all our learning on this topic, we performed a poem at assembly to share the story of the Brown Bull of Cooley with everyone.

The Brown Bull of Cooley:

Long ago in Ireland,
Where the green hills roll,
Lived a mighty brown bull,
Strong of heart and soul!
Queen Medb of Connacht, proud and bold,
Wanted the bull for her cattlefold.
She dreamed of riches, power, fame,
So to Ulster’s land, her soldiers came.
Marching, marching, through the rain,
Shields that clattered, spears that sang.
But who would guard the Ulster land?
Only Cú Chulainn, brave and grand!
A hero stood, though just one boy,
He faced the army—without coy!
With his sling, his spear, his mighty skill,
He fought them off, he would not still.
Day by day the battles came,
Each a contest, each a game…
At last the Brown Bull roared so loud,
It shook the earth, it drew a crowd!
No chains could bind, no hand could guide,
He thundered through the countryside.
The Brown Bull of Cooley, strong and free,
A legend told in history!
Though battles end, and time moves on,
The tale of the bull still lingers strong.
In Ireland’s heart, where stories grow,
The Brown Bull lives, from long ago!
