Literacy Week
WOW – What a Wonderful Literacy Week in Skerries Educate Together
Literacy week was a huge success in Skerries Educate Together. The aim of literacy week is to bring the pleasure of books and story to our children.
One of the big events of Literacy week is our Author visits. Every class had creative writing workshops with the authors and this was an inspirational and engaging experience for our children. Authors Jane Landy, Megan Wynne, Tony Curtis, Olive Mooney, Catherine Ann Cullen all brought the magic of creativity to our school.
We also had children from 5th and 6th class reading a thought-provoking or inspirational piece from a book every day over the intercom. This was followed immediately by DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read) The whole school taking part in DEAR time at the same time every day is a lovely thought. We also had buddy read time where 2 classes of different levels came together, sometimes in our lovely library, sometimes in a classroom, and read books together.
Another very popular event supported by the Parents is the Creative Writing competition. Every child in the school gets to write their own story in school and the parents have the extremely difficult task of selecting a winner for the WOW AWARD. WOW stands for Words of Wonder and every piece that we received confirms that that is a very appropriate name. The children were very proud of their lovely stories and reminded us adults once again how much can be achieved by children when encouraged to explore, experiment and imagine. Their creativity, ingenuity, and thinking outside the box was overwhelming. We are delighted that parents get involved in this, particularly as it is part of our curriculum and the home school connection for such an event is always welcome.
Literacy week culminated in a fun creative dress assembly with parents. The winners of the creative writing competition were presented with the WOW awards at this great event
