Free Workshop for parents

FREE Workshop for Parents of young children with Dr. John Sharry, Wednesday 5th December in the Carnegie Court Hotel, Swords at 7pm- 9:30pm
Dr John Sharry (Child and Family Psychotherapist Mater CAMHS, Irish Times Parenting Columnist) will facilitate a free parenting workshop for parents of young children in the Carnegie Court Hotel, Swords on Wednesday 5th December from 7pm – 9.30pm. This is the first of a series of workshops for parents in Fingal through the Fingal Parenting Initiative and will cover:
• Managing Sibling Rivalry and Helping Children Get Along with One Another
• Establishing Family Routines in the home
• Children’s Play Preferences and Planning for Christmas
The Fingal Parenting Initiative (FPI) is a County Wide support for all parents and families living in Fingal. The aim of the initiative is to help parents to develop and promote parent-child relationships, support child development and build positive behaviour. There are a number of ways in which parents can benefit from the Fingal Parenting Initiative. We have a website www.fingalparents.ie where you can find information on upcoming events and training as well as handy hints and tips on a range of topics and there are a number of free 7-week Parents plus Community Course which parents in Fingal can avail of.
To date FPI have rolled out over 20 Parents plus Courses across Fingal with another round of courses starting in February 2013. The Positive Parenting Training for Early Years is open to parents from all backgrounds and all walks of lives whose children attend preschool and the junior cycle of national schools (junior and senior infants) and looks at positive parenting techniques that support you and your child in maximising development. The programme is well-established and has a scientific evidence base that shows significant reductions in parent stress and increased positive behaviour among children. Over the 7-week course which will be delivered once a week (morning/afternoon) for 2 hours and fifteen minutes parents will learn proven ways to:
1. Help your child communicate and learn in play
2. Creatively help your child learn and reach their full potential
3. Manage difficult behaviour such as tantrums or aggression
4. Develop a good relationship with your child and enjoy being his/her parent.
Where possible we recommend that both parents attend the courses as we have found this helps the child the most but we understand that in a lot of cases this is not possible and encourage at least one parent to attend. Locations, times and venues for PPEY courses starting in February 2013 will be available to parents at the workshop and we would encourage parents to sign-up on the night.
Places are limited for the Parenting Workshop on Wednesday 5th December to sign-up for the workshop contact the Fingal County Childcare Committee on (01) 8077660 or email [email protected] to register your interest in attending the workshop.
