23 October 2018 ~ Comments Off on Maths Week

Maths Week

Last week, children throughout the school welcomed visitors to classes for Maths week. Among the many Maths games we played, some children taught the parent helpers the rules to Mancala, a strategy game that originated in Africa. With archaeological evidence dating back to 6000 BC, some historians believe that it is the oldest game in the world. We now have a new generation of players that will continue the tradition for a couple more years!

Thank you to all parent helpers that visited classes throughout the school last week.

15 October 2018 ~ Comments Off on Aladdin Connect

Aladdin Connect

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Our school is delighted to announce that we will shortly roll out the Aladdin Schools Connect to parents/guardians of children in our classes.

The school uses the Aladdin Schools software service for administrative purposes and Connect will give you secure access to messages from the school and to details of your child’s attendance & reports cards via secure login from your internet browser or Aladdin Connect App

Aladdin Connect is a fantastic way to enhance a school’s communication with parents. It enables parents to stay connected and informed about their child’s education by:
– Ensuring that the school has their most up to date contact information
– Keeping parents apprised of their child’s attendance
– Allowing parents view their child’s approved report card

Along with strengthening our home/school partnership, we also envisage Aladdin Connect helping the school by:
– Helping to improve attendance by allowing parents to keep track of any school days their child may have currently missed.
– Helping to reduce the amount of class/school notes being sent home
– Helping the school/ teachers communicate with parents when the need arises
– Reducing costs by eliminating the need to send school report cards by post
– Reducing costs by reducing the number of text messages that need to be sent and this is much more cost efficient to the school as text message spend to date is considerably high.

Online payments can be made using the App and we ask all parents to use the online payment facility from now on. This helps the school with transparency regarding money paid to the school and ensures there is no safety risk with large amounts of cash on the premises. You can view the amount to be paid and any other payment you have made to the school throughout the year.

You can rest reassured that Aladdin Schools uses state-of-the-art security to safeguard information entered by the school and data is stored and processed in strict compliance with Irish and European data protection laws.

In the next few days, you will receive a text/email message containing your registration link.  There will be one link per parent which will allow the parent to access information for all their children in the school from one user account. Please do not forward this text/email or share this link as this is a unique registration code for each parent for your child/children in this school. During registration you will choose a password that will be used in conjunction with your email address to securely access the Aladdin Connect going forward. Once you are registered you will be sent an email with links to download the Aladdin Connect App for your mobile device. The main advantage of using the App is to receive immediate alerts for app messages sent by your school. Downloading the App is highly recommended to enhance both the parent and school’s Connect experience.

By default both parents will have access to view their child’s contact information. If for any reason you do NOT wish to share your own personal contact information within the family circle or if you have any concerns regarding your particular family setup please contact the school in confidence to discuss or have this facility restricted.

In preparation for this please let the school know by Friday 26th October if your email address or phone number has changed recently

We hope that you enjoy using Aladdin Connect. Your class teacher, the secretary or myself will welcome any feedback or questions you may have.

Yours sincerely,

Tomás Hickey, Principal.

29 June 2018 ~ Comments Off on Skerries Educate Together NS Marathon 2018 – Day 37 and final update

Skerries Educate Together NS Marathon 2018 – Day 37 and final update

Hi everyone,

We are delighted to report that we have reached our destination of Vietnam, ending up in the capital city Hanoi after a journey of 661 km today.  This brings our total distance travelled since we left Skerries 36 days ago to a staggering 14,412 km.  Some of the children have run more than two marathons (84 km) during this time and the average distance that each child has covered is over 44 km, and they will take home a certificate of achievement marking their participation in the programme.  It has been great to see all of the children take on the challenge with such enthusiasm and energy, and we hope that it has been a positive experience for all of the families in the school.

A huge word of thanks has to go to all of the teachers and SNAs who implemented the programme each day, it simply couldn’t have happened without their support and dedication.  It was great to watch their encouragement of the children each step of the way (and they clocked up a significant number of kilometres themselves).

We plan to revisit the initiative in the third term next year (destination unknown at this point) and in the meantime we hope that you all manage to keep active and healthy over the summer.

For the final time, you can check out our exact route by clicking on the link below:

All the best,

Skerries Educate Together NS Marathon 2018 – Day 36 update

Hi everyone,

We are now within striking distance of Vietnam and hope to reach our destination after tomorrow’s efforts.  As for today, we have crossed into Laos and we will spend the night in the town of Muang Xai, which is the capital of the region and lies in a valley between two large mountains (whose names I can’t remember at the moment).  To get here, we added another 468 km bringing our grand total to 13,751 km so we should also break the 14,000 km barrier tomorrow.

You can follow our exact route by clicking on the link below:

Skerries Educate Together NS Marathon 2018 – Day 35 update

Hi everyone,

We are edging ever closer to Vietnam this week and all the children are making a big push over the last few days.  Today we completed our highest daily total to date, covering 747 km and bringing our overall total to 13,283 km.  We have crossed another international border too, arriving in the beautiful Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park (a natural tongue-twister) in Thailand for a night’s camping underneath the stars.  The park covers 524 square kilometres, is mainly covered with forests and contains the second highest peak in Thailand, namely Doi Pha Hom Pok mountain, which at 2,285m high is over twice the height of our own Carrountoohil.  The park also has many hot mineral springs, with water temperatures between 90 and 130 degrees Celsius, which will do us all good after our long trek today.

All the best,
